Coach Steve Carpenter

I am a Category 1 Road Racer and a USAC certified coach. I have over 19 years of road racing experience and have been formally coaching athletes for 5 years. The first 10 years I competed I have made mistakes in my training that have allowed me to fully analyze what works and what doesn’t in the overall development of the cyclist. Through too much trial and error, and eventually some very sound mentoring, my focus and abilities have evolved to a point where I expect results every time I line up to race. It is that experience that enables me to provide solid mentorship to my coaching clients.
I am married (13 years) with 4 young children at home (all boys; 8, 5, 3 and newborn). I hold a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training from Marshall University (1994). I am an Athletic Trainer by profession and am currently employed in the hospital setting as part of a high school sports medicine outreach program. My work experience also gives me great insight into avoiding and managing sport related injuries with my clients.
I feel I am a master of time management and I have an exceptional ability to balance family, work and cycling. My career, personal and cycling experiences merge to give me great insight into coaching amateur athletes. I focus on road cycling but currently coach road and off road athletes.Principles: My method utilizes a common sense approach with a straight forward periodization schedule. The main focus is on overall aerobic development while improving the efficiency of the cyclists’ efforts. It is my solid belief that the fundamentals of results are good health and a solid consistency of the training program. I have set up my program with the Master’s Road Racer in mind (although I currently coach individuals in the Espoir, Senior and Masters Categories). This is because I believe that I have very good insight with the balance of life and cycling. I take the approach of planning around real life issues such as work and family to develop riders who work with me.
I develop personalized plans beginning with an assessment of where the cyclist is in terms of physical abilities, experience and time available for training/competition. This is done by assessing previous results and experiences and briefly analyzing the training practices the athlete has previously employed. From there, we must set goals and their corresponding training objectives to reach the appropriately desired level of abilities. I request frequent contact with the athletes I work with by e-mail, phone contact available. Utilizing the Training Peaks system accomplishes this in an easy manner.Fee’s and Contact: I am currently an Assistant Coach to Dave Brown (owner www.kingdomsports.net ) who is a Joe Friel Ultrafit© Associate. I utilize the Training Peaks© system (www.trainingpeaks.com ) for program set up (Annual Plan) and tracking (daily workouts/testing updates) of my athlete clients. Current fees are $150 set up (one time fee), $150/month or $400/quarter. I appreciate, but do not require, a 1 year commitment. Contact by e-mail at stcarp@hotmail.com.
